BUILDING A SAFER CYBER ENVIRONMENT
Across the world, Australian children rank third most likely to be subjected to cyberbullying. With the increased use of technology and the introduction of 'one to one laptop/tablet' programs in schools, the risk of being bullied or bullying increases too. Children also can be unaware of the digital footprint they are leaving on the internet and how this may impact upon them later in life.
Project P911 is designed to educate children on cybersafety and enable them to take control of their role in using technology and to make responsible choices. The objective being to empower and educate children regarding:
Safekeeping of personal information
Use of images on the net
Networking
Digital footprints
Implementing collaborative strategies and team building to create a final product
Feeling part of a safe community where members work together to assist and educate each other; and
Personal contribution to a bullying resistant culture at school and home.
Designed by teachers for teachers, Project P911 provides a full list of resources and suggested lessons to investigate, plan and produce a cybersafely video to promote cybersafety to their peers.
Through the P911 (texting shorthand for 'Alert, Parents in the Room') programme students use collaborative learning to collectively create a cybersafety video. Each child takes an active roll in an aspect of film production, whether it be actor, scriptwriter, director or technician.
At the end of the term the children attend a working film studio in O'Connor where THEY film their cybersafety video (with a little help). Alternatively we can organise an incursion where we come to you.
The video is edited by our staff into an amazing 1-3 minute video.
At the conclusion of the project a gala evening (with appropriate red carpet awards) is held. Together with the cybersafety videos the audience are provided with facts and strategies from our cybersafety experts and the children themselves. In this way the parents, children and school community are empowered to deal with cybersafety in an open and safe environment.
All videos can be placed upon your school portal for the enjoyment and education of the school community.
